LED tail light Installation for V-Star 1100/650 Custom

Using GEN136-1157 LED tail light panel

1:  Remove the two screws, the red lens and the light bulb from the tail light assembly.

2:  To display properly, the LED panel needs to be mounted vertically.  The top flange of the reflector prevents this, so must be notched out.  Cut the top flange about 3/4” from each end with side cutters or tin snips.  The material is fairly soft, and not brittle, so is easy to cut.

3:  Cut along the crease of the flange with a sharp knife and remove.  Be careful not to damage the foam gasket.  (It might be possible to remove the gasket first, but if the gasket is bonded in place, just cut the flange carefully.

4:  Press the LED assembly into the lens.  (Note, the pictures below were taken with a clear lens, but the stock red lens with clear insert works exactly the same.)  The three small white LED’s should point down toward the license plate.  The board will be a slightly snug fit.  If it seems too tight, file the corners of the board slightly.  The top of the board should be just inside the top of the lens.  The bottom of the board should be in about 3/4”.  Make sure the LED board is centered in the lens.  Test the lens (with the board in place) on the reflector housing to make sure everything clears.  After testing, bond the four corners with epoxy or hot glue.

5:  Allow the epoxy or hot glue to cure overnight.

6:  Insert the bulb base from the LED board.  (Push in and turn clockwise).  The base only goes in one way because of the offset posts on the base.

7:  Test the running and brake light functions.  If there is a problem, it is probably the bulb base was not inserted properly into the socket!

8:  Turn the lens two or three revolutions to wind up the excess wire behind the LED board.  Replace the lens ensuring the wires are hidden behind the board.  Make sure the gasket is in the proper location all around the lens.  Make sure the lens is seated properly all around the base.  Install and tighten the screws.

Re-check operation of both running light and tail light.
